There are many ways that you can approach the word Social Justice.
Coming into this school I did not have a clear definition of the word
but as the years went by and the more I learned about what it meant
to the community and to the school I learned to piece together a
couple of things in a way that I build my definition of Social Justice
which would be gaining equality through overcoming a struggle.
Some of the obstacle that we face as we struggle to achieve
Social Justice is the lack of resources available to us. One big example of a
place where we lack resources is in the schools of our community.
Many of the grammar schools in our community do not have the resources
that are offered to other schools in different communities and this
affects the way that students learn and how much they are able to learn
with the few resources that are offered inside their school. Something that
I have learned from my English teacher is that students are tested in
an unfair way because the board members expect to see same results
in students across the city but they do not see that all the schools have
different things to work with and not all the schools are equal.
Somewhere where I have seen people fight to over come a struggle
was when our community came together and fought to get a new high school
built. A lot of people fought hard to bring a new school to our
community and with this new school we, as the students, have received
many opportunities to better the community and ourselves. The
resources that we now have are amazing and really help students aim
high for future goals.
What I want to do when I finish High School is go to school
and prepare for a social work/ psychologist career. Being a social worker
will allow me to help my community and fight for equalities in our
community’s schools and help counsel the children and youth in our
community.
My issue is connected to Social Justice because it is something that
a lot of people are exposed to. The media that we are exposed to
influences young women and young teens to do many things to meet this
standard that portrait a “perfect” body. Women should love themselves
for who they are and not struggle with changing who they are.
